Although art and design differ in their points of departure and forms of existence, the two fields continually inform and support one another. The talk explored the intersections between artist Murat Germen’s artistic practice and design, focusing on the dialogue between fiction and documentation.
“The Design Dimension in Artistic Practice” took place at İskele on Thursday, 17 February, at 18.45. The event was held with a limited number of participants, with HES code checks and face masks required.
Murat Germen is an artist, educator and archivist born in 1965 who uses photography as a means of expression and research. He teaches photography, art and new media at Sabancı University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
His body of work focuses on subjects including the effects of excessive urbanisation and gentrification, ownership and dispossession, urban rights, the sustainability of local cultures, human-induced environmental destruction, climate change, global warming and water rights. Cultural heritage, local archiving, documentation as an act of gathering evidence, conflicts between personal and collective memory, and the dynamics between betrayals and entrusted legacies are among the central themes of his practice.
Two monographic books on the artist have been published by Skira in Italy and MASA in Türkiye. He has contributed to more than ninety solo and group exhibitions in Türkiye and abroad. Numerous editions of his works have been included in private and institutional collections both in Türkiye and internationally.
