Urban Dialogues | Architectural and Urban Conservation • This edition of the Urban Dialogues series featured conservation architect Prof. Dr Kemal Kutgün Eyüpgiller and explored the development of architectural and urban conservation in Türkiye, future perspectives and possible solutions. The talk Architectural and Urban Conservation took place at İskele on Saturday, 9 April, at 14.00.
Kemal Kutgün Eyüpgiller completed his education at Galatasaray High School in 1981 and graduated as an architect from the Department of Architecture at Gazi University’s Faculty of Engineering and Architecture in 1986. In 1988, he completed the Restoration master’s programme at Istanbul Technical University’s Graduate School of Science, Engineering and Technology with a thesis titled Restoration Project for the Bedevi Sheikh Hüseyin Lodge. He received his PhD in 1995 with a dissertation titled Urban History of Kastamonu: Its Physical Development, Monumental Buildings and Houses.
Eyüpgiller received the TAÇ Foundation Achievement and Encouragement Award for restoration projects he developed both individually and as part of project teams. He was also granted the Restoration Project Award for an Example of Civil Architecture as part of the First National Architectural Conservation Awards organised by the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
His doctoral research was supported by the ITU Research Fund and the American Research Institute in Türkiye. With a scholarship from the Dutch government, Eyüpgiller worked as a visiting researcher at Utrecht University from September 1997 to July 1998 and at Oxford Brookes University in 2001.
He worked as a research assistant in the Department of Restoration at Istanbul Technical University’s Faculty of Architecture between 1992 and 1998. After serving as Vice Chair of the Department of Architecture for three years, he was a member of the Faculty Board from 2002 to 2005. In October 2005, he was appointed as the representative of the Council of Higher Education to Istanbul Regional Council No. V for the Conservation of Cultural and Natural Heritage.
